A trip down Great Southern Nights' five year memory lane

Great Southern Nights has been bringing some seriously great nights to New South Wales over the last 5 years. With the first iteration in November 2020, Great Southern Nights was created with the aim of reinvigorating the live music scene throughout and post COVID. After a hiatus in 2021, Great Southern Nights returned in March 2022, with the event playing a vital role in supporting the live music, entertainment, and hospitality sectors as they recovered from pandemic impacts.

A “Taster Series” showcased 10 nights of incredible gigs in late 2023, with a full program again rolling out in 2024, expanding with a walkable Gig Trail in Sydney’s Hollywood Quarter showcasing an even wider range of talent and highlighting some incredible hospitality offerings. There was also an epic free street party in Newcastle, with top notch artists and family friendly fun. 2025 launched with a surprise pop up gig in Sydney’s Martin Place, delighting passers by and officeworkers alike and saw the Gig Trail again activate Hollywood Quarter, as well offering a brand new trail in Newcastle.

Since its inception, Great Southern Nights has grown from strength to strength and continues to expand its musical footprint each year. Showcasing some of the country’s most iconic and established acts to those just bursting onto the scene, Great Southern Nights covers all genres - from country to classical, indie to industrial, rock to r’n’b and everything in between.

Let’s crunch some numbers… Since 2020, there have been;

  • Over 4000 artists perform to eager ears and eyes
  • 12 regions activated across New South Wales
  • Over 500 unique venues activated
  • 92 nights (that’s over 3 months of music every night!)
