Get your comfy shoes on – The Gig Trails are back

As the nights get cooler and the energy across New South Wales heats up, Great Southern Nights returns with one of its most immersive offerings: the Gig Trails. Spanning four distinct precincts, these curated, walkable experiences invite music lovers to follow the sound through streets, venues and unexpected corners - blending live performance with food, art, interactive experiences and community connection.

Here’s how the Gig Trails are rolling out this year.

Newcastle | Friday 1 May (1pm – late)

Start in familiar territory in Newcastle, the trail is returning to the Midtown precinct for the second year running.

From early evening, the streets hum with activity as punters drift between bars, rooftops and intimate band rooms. Expect everything from established acts like Adam Newling and Radio Free Alice, to rising indie acts like horse, to late-night DJs across multiple venues, alongside buskers and pop-up performers tucked into laneways and unexpected spaces.

What makes Newcastle’s trail special is its ease - no long treks, no rigid schedule. You can map your night or let it unfold organically with many events that are free, lowering the barrier to entry and encouraging spontaneous discovery.

Between sets, the precinct’s growing food scene comes into play, with nearby eateries and bars offering everything from quick bites to sit-down dinners, all within walking distance.

Chippendale | Saturday 9 May (1pm – late)

Next stop: Chippendale. A teeny pocket of Sydney known for its creative edge, drinking holes, incredible food and tight-knit streets.

Throughout the afternoon and into the night, venues will spill out onto the streets with DJs, bands and collaborative performances. Think small bar intimacy and spontaneous moments that blur the line between audience, artist, venue and walkway.

Food is central here too. Chippendale’s reputation for diverse dining means you can curate your own progressive “gig and graze” experience as you wander  - from the casual street eats of Spice Alley to standout restaurants like Ester and Olio.

Port Kembla | Saturday 9 May (from 12pm – late)

On the same day, the trail heads south for its debut in Port Kembla and this one is going to be a doozy!

Running from midday through to late, Port Kembla’s “Sounds of Steel” Gig Trail is as much about community storytelling as it is about music. Nine unique venues, from creative studios to reimagined industrial spaces are opening their doors, hosting performances, record label pop-ups, art exhibitions and more.

You might start with a live set in a gallery, stumble across an installation or workshop, then end the day dancing to iconic artists like Harvey Sutherland and stack of localtalent.

Local food and drink offerings anchor the day, with independent operators showcasing the flavours of the South Coast. It’s a reminder that Gig Trails aren’t just about bringing music to a place - they’re about amplifying what’s already there.

Newtown and Enmore | Saturday 16 May (2pm – late)

The final stop lands in one of Sydney’s most iconic live music corridors: Newtown and Enmore.

From afternoon into the early hours, this precinct transforms into a full-spectrum celebration of live music culture. Venues of every kind, from beloved pubs to late-night haunts, become part of a single, flowing trail.

Here, the density is the magic. You’re never far from the next set, the next discovery, the next moment. Emerging artists share the bill with established names like Jaguar Jonze and Maddy Jane, while DJs, pop-ups and street performances fill the gaps in between.

But it’s not just about the music. Workshops, art activations and collaborative spaces invite audiences to engage more deeply - whether that’s discovering local makers, participating in creative sessions or simply soaking up the atmosphere between sets.  On top of all of this, there’s the incredible culinary delights that Newtown and Enmore offer, guaranteeing that the Gig Trail will satisfy all your senses!

So Get Amongst It!

Across all four precincts, the Gig Trails tap into something bigger than a typical night out. They’re designed to be fluid, social and deeply local, encouraging people to move, explore and connect with shared energy.

Whether you’re following a favourite artist, discovering someone new, joining a workshop or just chasing the next sound down a laneway, the experience is yours to shape.

And that’s the beauty of the Gig Trail: it’s not just about where you end up. It’s about everything you encounter along the way.
